What is Hyaluronic acid?
Hyaluronic acid (hyaluronan or HA or sodium hyaluronate) is a naturally occurring substance found in our body with numerous biological functions, including keeping our joints in great condition and our skin hydrated and plump.
In skincare, Hyaluronic acid works as a humectant. It minimizes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by plumping up the skin. Hyaluronic acid "pulls" moisture from the surface of the skin into the skin to equilibrate the balance between the deep and top layers of the skin.
Its gel-like molecules can hold up to a thousand times their own weight in water. While Hyaluronic acid is created within our own body, our ability to produce it decreases gradually as we age. We are not able to retain as much water which results in a loss of elasticity and deeper wrinkles.
FEY Cosmetics proprietary Hyaluronic acid blends
Our signature Hyaluronic acid blends combine two specific types of Hyaluronic acid of different molecular weights which work in perfect synergy with our selected organic and plant-based ingredients.
Different types of Hyaluronic acid
It is crucial to mention that, based on the molecular weight, the biological properties of Hyaluronic acid change. It is a fallacy to think of Hyaluronic acid as one unique entity. Its fragments have a different molecular weight, going from several hundred to above two million Daltons. Depending on the formula, the Hyaluronic acid blend differs. At FEY, we developed various blends of high and low molecular weight. Due to their unique formula, they have the capacity to penetrate deeper skin layers, thus nourishing the skin aptly.
For instance, a balanced content of low MW and high MW contributes to a long-lasting moisturizing effect. For skin tightening, lifting and smoothing effects, a formula high in MW prevails because it enables for high MW hyaluronic acid to settle on the upper layer of the epidermis, referred to as the corner stratum. It creates a film on the surface for an instantly improved appearance of minimized fine lines and wrinkles.
Lastly, a combination of high and low MW, but with a majority of low MW facilitates a faster absorption. Hyaluronic acid of low MW sinks deeper into the skin where nutrients are absorbed and penetrate quickly into the dermis for a glowing, smooth and luminous complexion. To really penetrate the skin's surface, it requires to be bioengineered to have a low molecular weight. Once on the upper dermis, low MW Hyaluronic acid fragments will polymerize to the larger size ones we find naturally in the dermis.
Why Hyaluronic acid blends allow us to remove glycols
Similarly to HA, Glycols are humectants. They are compounds largely used in the cosmetics industry to increase the penetration of topical products, thanks to their small molecules and high affinity to water. However, the use of glycols is questionable and controversial because of an increasing number of allergies and irritation reports. Propylene Glycol, for instance, has to be avoided in case of damaged or burned skin due to its permeability. Glycols are used by a large majority of cosmetics manufacturer because it is difficult to find alternative solutions with the same chemical abilities of glycols.
At FEY Cosmetics, thanks to our research and commitment to providing the safest skin care products, we developed the next generation of hyaluronic acid-based topical skincare products that can replace glycols and other delivery systems. Thanks to thorough research and multiple experiments, we have discovered that we could achieve better effects with optimal ratios of hyaluronan's high and low molecular weight combined with a potent botanical blend. Hyaluronic acid is an alternative to glycols, but only with an elaborate and fiddly formulation. Another upside of HA is the fact that it's a biological humectant, unlike glycols which are chemicals.
Why are our blends special?
Throughout our research, we were adamant on achieving blends that would suit and show results for all skin types. We have achieved to deliver Hyaluronic acid to the deeper layers of the epidermis in a non-invasive way. Each of our blends has a specific function with a tailored speed and depth of penetration precisely to deliver the bio-nutrients exactly where the skin needs them. Nothing is left to chance, solely the result of rigorous formulations allying cutting-edge science and botanical expertise. Our range has been conceived to reach various skin layers (from the surface to the dermis) in order to tackle multiple skin woes including elasticity loss, wrinkles, dehydration, acne or hyperpigmentation.
The combination of our signature Hyaluronic acid blends with potent natural extracts has enabled us to create unique and result-driven skin cocktails. Here are some examples for reference:
- Combined with aloe vera, we have a solution packed with antioxidants, excellent to heal wounds and scars. Also acts against puffiness.
- Combined with meadowfoam seed oil, our formula locks in the moisture. In addition to achieving deep hydration, it balances the sebum level and detoxifies the skin.
- Combined with sea kelp to increase skin elasticity and smooth out the skin tone. The skin looks visibly healthier.
- Combined with organic baobab oil and green tea extracts, we have a formula that works to nourish, firm and stimulate the skin. Not to mention the protective benefits as these ingredients are anti-inflammatory.
- Combined with organic tamanu oil, we have a regenerating formula that helps soothe and retexture the skin by healing scar wounds. It also boosts skin regeneration.
- Combined with organic grapefruit seed extract, we have a formula that fights against free radicals, oxidative stress and promotes skin elasticity.
Every ingredient has its place, its function and has been carefully selected in combination with others that complement it to maximize its benefits. Each product is tailored to a specific skin need. Regardless of our Hyaluronic acid blends, our entire range has been designed and formulated to moisturize skin, working topically to deliver high quality and quantity of HA into the cutaneous tissue.
